Whilst looking at the various magazines I started thinking of the various elements the advert would need to include, for the final magazine advert I want it to be quite simplistic, which fits the style created with the digipack and music video.
I knew I would have to include the band name and album name, perhaps the name of the song "bad dreams" which the music video is for.
Also the name and logo of the record company would be needed.
I chose to include a quote as well, from a well known music magazine such a nme, or kerrang as it is more appropriate to my genre.

Magazine Advert: Research and Planning
When planning my magazine advert I looked back at the images and ideas I had gathered for the digipack and the music video, I needed to make sure the advert had the same look as the digipack and music video in order to maintain a consistent image for the band.
We had been provided with a number of magazine adverts, I picked out a couple which I felt matched the genre of the band, and also matched the kind of look I am trying to create.
Also within these adverts though were a couple which whilst they didn't quite fit the image I was attempting to create, they included ideas which I thought could work well.
For example, in these two images I liked how they had the singer at the forefront thus conforming to genre conventions, but still pictures the entire band instead of relying on just a single band member(the singer).
From this preliminary research my thoughts were to have the majority of the advert be a photograph of the band. such as with the "The Dirty Youth" example.
Font wise for the magazine advert I chose to use the same font as on my digipack, this would keep a level of consistency across all the products, the same would go for the colours and other aspects of mise-en-scene, such as costume. in order to keep to the product and image I have created for the band.

Digipack - research and planning
I started researching into digi packs designs for my chosen genre with a simple google search, I managed to find these images which showed the content which bands of a similar genre used in thier digipaks. these also were similar to the feel of the song and the band which I am already building in relation to the music video, and the images I had already located for my mood board.
I also searched for similar bands on amazon and looked at the designs of their album covers and digipacks, the bands I looked at were sigur ros, mogwai which I had identified through using last fm and also nirvana
One of the motifs I noticed with rock digipaks, is that the images used contain a spread of traditional art, paintings and drawings and also photographs. so for my digipak I decided to not only include photographs of the band but also to include drawings and traditional art as well.

Record Label Reseach
When creating the ancillary tasks we have to reference a record label, and they have to sign bands of the same genre and style.
My media studies teacher suggested looking into post-rock bands and the labels associated with them, and I also looked into record labels associated with the genre of rock which I had identified.
the first record label I identified was Fat Cat records.
I got to this record label through the band sigur ros who I had Identified from my research into both music videos and Record labels. However from research into the types of band they often signed, I found the genre of the music was too dissimilar to my own.
Because I thought, though not completely right I was along the correct lines in terms of a record label, I used sigur ros as a band to work from, so I used last fm to find similar bands and from there found different labels.
One of the labels I found was Chemikal Underground, they are a record label which focuses on post-rock/rock bands, I found them through the band mogwai via last fm. Because they were related to the genre of my song, and often signed bands which had a similar style to the one I have chosen.

Continued research
When researching into record labels I stumbled across the band sigur ros, the style and tone of their music was very similar to that of my track so I begun looking into some of their music videos,
the video for their song Glósóli particularly stood out to me as I thought the locations, lighting, colour grading and all round shot composition up until about 3:50 were very fitting for the genre of this song and my own, also this video reflected the sorts of ideas I had for my video.
Thinking about the new urban part of the music video I found this video by the group mogwai, I liked the use of slow motion here and the sense of isolation the video manages to create.

We had to do a presentation on the ideas we have so far for our music videos, the idea was to get audience feedback on our plans for the music video, focusing on the positives, and also finding the potential flaws in the idea.
As I mentioned before, part of my idea was to have the band performing in a studio, however people said that perhaps this wouldn't fit the rest of the video seeing as it was all outdoors. this idea was changed to instead of having another location with the whole band, having just the singer in an urban location.
Also having just the singer in a scene is a common convention seen in rock music videos, even though I've found rock videos tend to focus on the band as a whole conventionally, there is still a focus on the singer as an individual over the other band members.

Research- Music video task
The initial Genre I chose was Alternative rock however after further research I found that the more general but more accurate genre would simply be rock. many of the genre conventions used in alternative rock apply so the research I have gathered is still relevant, but by redefining the genre i should be able to more closely create a video which complies with the songs style and genre.
For the task I chose to look further into this song by Nirvana.

I chose to look at it as it is representative of it's genre and displays elements such as Goodwin's theories very clearly, the key genre themes and conventions that I begun to pick up on when researching videos was the portrayal of the band as a whole, they weren't marketed as a singular person. this is clear through the use of a band name rather than the name of the singer.
As I was beginning to identify key themes and ideas of Rock videos and the kind of areas the songs and videos explored, such as the selling of the band and there music as the product rather than perfectly crafting a particular image, and also the common technical aspects used such as blur effects and having a wide usage of shot types thought primarily focusing on shots at the extremes of distance, I found this Prezzi slideshow, which perfectly outlined the ideas on conventions I had formed about the genre.
Some of the information in there is not quite accurate for my genre as it focuses more heavily on indie music instead of Rock which is the genre I have chosen to investigate.

Research - reference video
Another video I found which closely matches the style I will be going for in my music video is Boston by the band Augustana, the use of different shot types from huge, wide angle shots, to close ups of the artists face, is exactly the style of camera usage I am aiming for in the outside locations of my video (perhaps inside but space constraints will limit this).
Also seen in this video is the use of a beach as a set, this is something I've thought about but would take some serious planning to achieve, as to have the shots I want an overcast day would be needed, when there are few people around, which for the beach means a very early start. this will be something I think about as the logistics of it may not be feasible.

Research- Mood board
Gathering reference images
Now that I had a few ideas in my head I decided to gather a collection of reference pictures, this is a technique I often use when attempting to get a clear grasp of what I want and turn ideas into something more cohesive and focused. I first went to Google, because they have a powerful and easy to use search engine.

I first went to Google, because they have a powerful and easy to use search engine.
Unfortunately Google image search didn't turn up a large amount of images that matched the ideas I had, despite a number of different search queries/settings.
So instead I turned to Deviantart, I hoped they would have more of the kind or images I was looking for rather than the promotional material Google search tended to show.
Mood-board
After finding a good selection of images I chose to make a mood-board, with the various ideas I was forming and the feel I was attempting to achieve I felt it would be a good way to collate what I had, plus it would give a clear indication of what I was trying to achieve.
I created the mood-board in a program called Gimp (GNU Image Manipulation Program) a free to use, open source image editing software.
Research- Examining Genre Techniques
Colourisation/Colour levels
Whilst looking further into music videos I started thinking about the kind of techniques used that would be relevant for my track. going by the feel of the song I felt that an almost washed out colour pallet would be appropriate, such as is seen in this video from the Alternative Rock band Placebo.
The blue colourisation in this video helps to enhance the moody feel of the song and I think this would be suitable for my piece. this type of colouring is also shown in the video Seize the day by Avenged Sevenfold.
Another technique I noticed used sparingly in the avenged sevenfold, video but heavily in the Placebo and other videos I found was the use of depth of field to single out the singer or a specific action, this technique seemed to be repeated through many videos including the Nirvana video from the previous post and in this Video from the All-american Rejects.

Research- Defining genre
I initially didn't have a clear idea of what the genre f the music video was, this meant I had some difficulty finding videos to analyse for genre conventions, however after playing the track to my brother he suggested they sounded slightly like nirvana. so I had a basis to start from, the first video I looked at was this track
In this video I noticed a lot of techniques which could be interesting to use, such as the use of depth of field on Kurt Cobain's face also what stood out straight away was the colour change of the background throughout the video, a technique which is also seen in this video

though the second video is slightly away from the genre of the song I am using I think the technique could be an interesting one to utilize, though some thought will have to go into how to use it without seeming it "tacky"
From this start I decided to look into Alternative rock as the genre for my piece, the style of the song may stray slightly more towards conventional "Rock" however this is such a broad term which encompasses so many diverse sub-genres that identifying conventions would be near impossible due to the huge differences between those sub-genres for example the tropes of Industrial rock would be hugely different to those seen in say Country-rock, I will however be relating to rock videos which match the style of the song.
From the beginnings of my research I have begun to Identify some of the key conventions of the genre such as usually long shots are used showing the whole band rather than just one person(the singer), this shows that within the genre the focus is on creating the Band as the product to sell rather than the emphasis being on an individual.
By choosing Alternative Rock as a genre, it allowed me to use a wide variety of different styles from the many sub-genres that name entails, this means I can create a piece which is not only representative of the genre by incorporating the conventions and trends seen across the entire spectrum of videos, but also to create a somewhat original piece by utilizing the variety seen within the same genre.
